      Sori Yanagi

      Designer

Sori Yanagi was one of Japan’s most influential industrial designers, celebrated for blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modernist principles. Born in 1915, he studied both art and architecture, and his work reflects a deep respect for craftsmanship, simplicity, and organic form.

Among his most iconic creations is the Butterfly Stool, designed in 1954. This elegant piece features two symmetrically curved plywood shells, joined with a subtle brass rod at the center—evoking the delicate wings of a butterfly in mid-flight. It’s a perfect example of East-meets-West: the stool combines Japanese minimalism with the molded plywood techniques pioneered by Charles and Ray Eames.

Now part of MoMA’s permanent collection, the Butterfly Stool is more than just seating—it’s a sculptural statement of timeless beauty and quiet innovation.
